Elena Mikhailova was born in Baku (Azerbaijan) in 1982, and began studying violin with her father at the age of six. Regarded as a child prodigy she moved to Spain in 1991 and, in the 1993-94 academic year, became the youngest pupil at the Queen Sofia Advanced School of Music. Since 1994 she has performed around the world in countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Japan, England, France, Belguim, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Serbia and Russia.

At the age of twelve she took master classes with both Yehudi Menuhin, who was fascinated by her interpretation, David Zafer (Canada), Silvia Marcovici, etc. She also studied with Zakhar Bron and Serguei Fatkouline at the Negri Violin School (Lübeck, Germany). At the age of twenty she graduated from the Madrid Conservatoire, receiving an honorable mention for her violin studies and the special award for chamber music.

She has appeared in various international festivals, such as the Southern Bohemia Music festival in the Czech Republic and Austria, and the International Festival of Dance and Music in Granada; she also took part in the Schubert Festival in Vilabertran (Catalonia). Her recorded work includes a CD of music by Sarasate, Falla and Montsalvatge. In addition, she has given master classes for students in Valencia (in 2002) and took part in the 50th Young Musician Competition, broadcast by Spanish national TV and radio, alongside other European musicians.

She has featured as a soloist with various ensembles including the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic Orchestra of Lodz, the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Marchigiana Philharmonic Orchestra (Italy), the Spanish Radio and Television Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Mexico, the Symphonic Orchestra of Belgrade, etc., performing concertos by composers such as Brahms, Sibelius, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Paganini under the baton of top conductors such as Jean-Pierre Faber, Ovidiu Balan, Gerd Albrecht, Gloria Ramos, Vladimir Keradzhiev, Vassili Petrenko, Ferreiro Lobo, Ramón Torrelledó, Ilarión Ionescu Galati, among others.

She has won awards in several prestigious international competitions, including the Prague Concertino (1994), the Viotti-Valsesia (II Prize in 2006), and the Pablo Sarasate in Pamplona. She also won First Prize in both the Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition (1999) and Spain’s Young Musician of the Year, the gold medal in Catalonia’s El Primer Palau Competition (2002), III Prize (Bronze Medal)at the International Vioin Competition “Henryk Szering” (Mexico, 2003), I Prize at the International Violin Abbado Competition (Milano, 2004), as well as award for the best chamber work (the Schubert Sonata), I Prize at the “Júlio Cardona” International Competition (Portugal, 2005).

The violin/piano duet she formed with her mother twelve years ago has also won awards in chamber music competitions. A recording of her performance of Paganini’s Concerto No. 1 at Barcelona’s Palau de la Música has been released on Mitsubishi Records. Her plans include further recordings, recitals and tours of both Spain and abroad. She has been considered “spectacular violinist” by newspaper ABC (May of 2004) and mentioned as “one of the major promises of the current musical importance” by Jeunesses Musicales of Spain newspaper. Since 2005 she is an official pupil in the master course with the prestigious professor and violinist Salvatore Accardo in Cremona (Italy).
